Besides it’s not every day that you rub shoulders with the crème de la crème of the media and political society in Kenya.

And let’s not forget the part that its 3000 per head, am sure that was meant to keep the hooligans out of such event – no pun intended. But to be serious this was the equivalent of the American Oscars, and the pomp, hype, mood and the caliber of the people had to be just right.

Highlights of the evening, PLO Lumumba’s speech of which I can’t seem to remember a single word of what he said and I could almost swear that I gave a heart ovation after he had finished and mellowed over his wise words – politicians skills. I have never found Churchill particularly funny, but for some reason I found myself clapping very vehemently when he went to receive his award and left the crowd in giggles.

The mandate of Kenya films commission is to motivate local producers towards quality film and TV productions. It’s a crying shame that awards were being dished out to actors, producers and directors of movies that hadn’t even been absorbed into the Kenyan theaters (market) and you’re like, when did that movie debut and how come’s you hadn’t got the chance to see it? To be precise, the Rugged Priest, the Brief Case, Me, My Wife and Her Guru and Muigwithania all sounded OK but personally I think - Me, My Wife and Her Guru would have been an interesting watch based on its preview and the actors involved in the production.

Even after the awards were over I never got to hear of them again, if I did I would have gladly found the time to go purchase one if it were within my budget. But truth be told it would be naïve of me to assume such movies would be the equivalent cost of the ones found on Moi avenue. Or maybe it’s just plain ignorance that I never had the interest looking for Kenyan movies. Kenya has got talent that’s for sure and am glad some people finally got recognition for the years that have spent in the industry e.g. Vioja Mahakamani

As for me and my escapade, my gals and I forced Kidum – Ok... Well… Kinda… but if you scream on top of your lungs does sounds like forcing. So I kindly requested him to repeat my favorite song. To top it all up I got a snap taken with his highness the comedian Eric Omondi which never made it to the print in the first place – “damn the photographer”.

By yours truly Mo Mungai
Read Mo's blog: http://evemoe.blogspot.com
Follow @KarenMungai

Discussing Infidelity on Sebuleni by Carole Mandi (NTV)

Carole Mandi on this particular show is discussing a quite sensitive issue yet one that cannot be ignored, and that's infidelity. Dr. Harts, who's a renown phychologist and a major newspaper columnist on relationship matters is her guest.

The audience gives different opinions, trying to explain reasons why couples cheat. Some point out negligence from one of the partners as the cause. Others attribute it to financial reasons. And many others. Dr. Harts observes the root cause root as quite different from these views.

Briefly, lets dive into statistics. Dr. Harts states that according to research, 60% of men and 40% of women have admitted to have strayed in relationships. If this shocks you, what you're about to hear will shock you even more. He goes on to stay that over 80% percent of people are bound to stray. He explains that the simple cause is that 'this is how we're wired'. Meaning, this number of men and women would readily stray, if only, an opportunity was there.

We know infidelity as the major cause of divorce, yet studies show that children do best in a monogamous kind of relationship between parents.

On the other hand, statistics have also that in Kenya, the new number of HIV infections is higher among married couples. As a matter of fact, among the guests in the show is a married couple, living positively with HIV. This is quite a disturbing reality. The show went on presenting different perspectives and this really got me thinking.

What's the solution?
As much as a human being will be tempted to get attracted to the wrong person, we also have a free will to choose. The expert view is fully supported in the holy bible for instance, which states that we're always at opposition from our own human nature, which pushes us to want to do the wrong thing.

One of the practical choices we'll have to make is avoiding opportunities that may present vulnerable situations. If you're committed to your family, you'll definitely plan to make this choice.

As a spiritual person, I know that am not only accountable to my wife but to God first. My pastor made this statement in his message, that our desire for spiritual things must supersede our desires for natural things. Having this in mind will guide you in the decisions you make, including what you plan to do or not do because of what you believe.

Nakutazamia by Mercy Wairegi

Produced by: Billy Frank (Audio)
Album: Nuru
Youtube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uT6_mkROxg

Mercy Wairegi has released some of the most refreshing gospel tunes in Kenya. I watched her latest video Nakutazamia on Youtube and it's just awesome. Among her BVG's is none other than Christine Ndela, another big name in Kenyan gospel music.

The reggae styled worship song will leave you asking for more.

The video is shot on an evening beach setting. Something else you'll appreciate in this song is the rhythm and the drums. The feel of a live band is just captivating including the bass guitar. You can't fail to feel the passion and the energy.

Apart from the music, the song has deep worship lyrics. As Mercy sings out words of gratitude and worship to God, you cannot help but join her and feel the same way. Indeed most radio station don't seem to care much about this; ironically most of these shows are during the hours when some of us are with school going children in the vehicles. Yes some topics maybe relevant, but they need to be discussed in moderation. there are shows like bursted - you wonder what the purpose is; human beings are not angels and assisting partners to burst each other with no help for reconciliation is sad. I often switch from station to station, and I must admit i foind KISS FM more moderate and comfortable - except for the boring music.

We need talk shows to be more on protecting and promoting human values. If a Husband or Wife have issues, then the show shoulde be on how best to help resolve the issues - correct weaknesses/mistakes; assistying to promote cohesion and not concentrate on developing rebelions. We are lucky in Africa that some of the caltural values have helped togetherness in the family; as oposed to western where marriage is more than often short time - and its quite normal for one to say they are in their fith marriage.

Henry Okubo

The Role of Technology in Business on Enterprise Kenya (KTN)

When did you last go to a store? A few minutes ago may be? The store is a good example of how dependant business is on technology. It’s integration into a business causes efficiency and generally profitability, at various levels. In our own context, we might need to ask ourselves whether this has been realized and if not what are the reasons. Peter Wakasiaka of IAT tried to answer these questions in an interview on KTN’s Enterprise Kenya.

He said that there is need for awareness. Entrepreneurs need to know the benefits of integrating technology into their business. The best was to see this is by looking at the long term. For instance, it might cost to buy software to run some operations of the business, but in the long run, that will save on salaries.

He also explored on the benefits of using locally developed software. We do understand our needs better, and local developers are thus in a position to develop what is most ideal for us here. A system developed from outside may sometimes require much work in customizing it in order to cater for the need it’s meant to solve. We need to encourage the adaptation and development of Kenyan based software. This is good for the industry and the economy as well.

Business Tips: How to Earn From Your Talent
This is a common part of the program. The tips this time, involves helping someone utilize their talents for a vocation. It is important to ask yourself these questions:

1.What is your talent? What is it that you love doing or find it that you can start?
2.Find a way to market it. If you are into music, you could for instance find approaches some places to book for gigs
3.Think about what it is worth to you: You must value your talent.
4.Work on what you want to pursue especially if you’re not good at it. She reports the ‘kissing incident’ to Julia who goes ahead to confront her mother, and much to the shock of some ‘observers’, that’s OJ and Sish, slaps her mother on the face. Miss Morgan happens to be watching too, in disbelief.

It later emerges that Julia’s parents are divorcing. As you watch her plead with her mother, “Please don’t leave us…I’m sure you can work it out”, your heart cannot help going out to a young person in her position. Experts would tell us that a family breaking apart is one of the most painful experiences. What this does to the children is devastating.

What if someone’s decision is to blame for this? It’s possible to feel anger and frustration towards such a person, yet many people think it’s acceptable to cheat on a spouse. Before someone looks at this issue as casually as the society is gravitating towards, it might help to take a good look at your family, which you value (assuming you do), and know that you could be writing a sentence to its demise, and permanently affect other peoples lives, whom you claimed to care about, for good! For instance, the channels that were used to put arms in the wrong hands are still open. It’s so shocking that some high ranking people have been involved in this and other vices that fueled the violence.

The government needs to see the seriousness, and determine to put a stop to this, provide justice to the victims and implement the reform agenda.

We as Kenyans have a role to play. We must refuse negative ethnicity, and preach the same. We must see each other as brothers and sisters, and anything that says otherwise should not be given any chance. This has to start with an individual. We need to pray for this nation. We cannot sit back in assumption. We have to be proactive.

Business, Investment and the Future of Kenya on Eye Witness Business (K24)

What do we want to see in Kenya? We could have dozens of answers for this question: better living standards, improved security, poverty eradication, access to better health care, more opportunities, improved infrastructure, increased literacy levels and the list goes on. Where does the realization of these begin? Business: entrepreneurship and investment holds the key to the answer. The two have to be brought together. The fusion of resources and business ventures must happen.

Emerging Markets Investments Club (EMIC) are on a mission. This is a consortium of various stakeholders – investors, entrepreneurs, and even government who come together, share information on how to take this country forward. A major aim is to create human capital and build capacity among entrepreneurs. This is what we need to make things work for us.

Dr. Karanja of EMIC insists that our perception towards business and entrepreneurship needs to change. We must have the attitude that ‘it’s possible’; it can be done. We have a lot of potential; ideas that can transform people’s lives, and believing that we can change things to be what we want them to be, is important in order to take our ideas to the next level. We might not have all the infrastructure required to do it, unlike in the developed nations, but we can start with what we got. We can start now, and not wait for the sweet by and by, or for somebody else to come from outside to help us do it.

Asked about his take on the Vision 2030, James Kairu the founder of EMIC supports it and maintains that we can utilize it to change things. We should all come together, as we ask ourselves how this can be achieved. We must also ensure that it’s free from any political motivation.

We also need to be action oriented. Actualization is where the rubber meets the road. EMIC is active on this aspect and is having various initiatives involved in training entrepreneurs, providing mechanisms for mobilization for funding of ventures and ideas, particularly private equity and venture capital. I personally believe this is the fuel that we need to launch this country onto an economic progression.

Launch of Ihub on Financial Markets Live (KTN)

Launching of Ihub was quite phenomenon for the technical community. And so many people did look up to her.

But leaving that for a moment, I’ve posted severally concerning this matter, and every time, trying to be optimistic and as defending as I can. But as of now, I can only say one thing: I’m done! So are many concerned Kenyans I believe. Not with Esther really; I believe she’s dealing with something that she seems to have no control over, what ever it is, I don’t know.

This rule has been tried and tested, and it really sobers me up: when you think everyone else is wrong but you, that should be a red flag right there. We’ve all been suspecting something going wrong, and felt that it will come out sooner or later. Well, the writing is on the wall; finally, it has come out!

I don’t at all wish to get into the relationship obscurity; I’d only pray that poor Wilson will have the strength to move on. However, I can’t leave without saying this: honoring parents is not a choice, unless the bible is the most foreign book to you. The single thought of taking them to court, for the simple reason of caring for you, so much enough to get the best professional help in the country, is not honor. Anyone can figure that out.

Now, this is my problem: Esther is under spiritual guidance. However, despite the big mistakes that she’s been making, that are so obvious (who would sue their parents for the ‘mistake’ of loving them!?), nothing seems to be bothering her spiritual leadership. Jesus Christ said, “You’ll know them by their fruits”. The fruits are all too evident. If I were in the same church or organization, I would run for my life!!

Esther Arunga Loosing Her Chaguo la Teeniez Award Nomination: Was it Justified?

Most of us watched closely the recent turn of events involving former KTN News anchor Esther Arunga that were quite complicated. It was marked by her drastic decisions she made, and that’s what left many questions in people’s minds. It is obvious that some decisions we make come at a cost, but could Esther have had too much than she bargained for? For instance, for someone like her, walking near a police cell, let alone being in one, would have been a strange piece. Now she can tell you a thing or two about it.

But her woes are far from over. Having been a darling and a good example to many, she had been nominated for the Chaguo la Teeniez award, which votes on the best role model; almost has a tag on her! But that is no more, and she has been replaced. My nagging question is, was this justified? I believe that one event cannot change who you are. It shouldn’t be fair to entirely rely on it in judging someone.

So who has replaced Esther for the nomination, you must be asking. I think the bench would be the ideal place for this and so it really caught my attention.

There are all the questions and speculations surrounding Hellon, including being said to be heading a cultist organization. After listening to him, I can’t really say that Finger of God Ministries is a cult. That would not be my issue. In fact, I think what he says has soundness if you measure it with the bible. And I appreciated the fact that he was not shying away from the bible in today’s very secular world.

But that does not mean I agree with him; I find his approach is too strong; Christian faith is founded on principles of love, forgiveness, humility and such. I've been taught that if we’re so concerned about proving a point to someone, then something is wrong. I think Hellon has enough people whom he seems ready to get even with. He was saying it on the show; for instance, he really blasted the guys from his church who differed with him; he actually fired them in the first place!

Then comes Esther’s case: this is a young woman who has her life put together, flying high in her career, preparing to get married while all of a sudden these things take a totally different turn, due to association with Hellon’s church. I don’t about you but we don’t do that in the church I come from! At present, a word has it that she’s be receiving professional help.

Then I have a question for Hellon: what’s his vision for this country, as he prepares to vie for the high office? I ask this because what I see of him, is more of a fighter, ready to finish off an opponent. Well it’s true that this has its place, but by now we need to have seen a vision; someone with a mission. Maybe he’ll eventually convince me and the people.

Esther Arunga on the Bench (K24)

I watched Esther Arunga on the bench. She looked good and pretty as always. One thing was quite evident from her tone and her emphasis: combat! She came out very strong, and she had a word or two for several people whom she was not very happy with. She has several law suites to file too. Then the quite huge announcement that one could expect from her, that of running against Joseph Hellon for the country’s top job! She’s not just announcing this, but has all the faith that it will be realized; she actually said she’ll be very surprised if it doesn’t.

But this is my confusion right there: what is it about? Is it about faith or political goal. I’ve no problem with either but the connection between the two ought to be properly defined.

I also couldn’t stop thinking that Esther is not herself. For instance, if you say that someone is planning to kill you, and say it on television, articulately identify the person without blinking, you’d better have the evidence. It should not be so easy for anyone. It’s also hard to understand how she decided to quite her job. One might think that her positioning would be the best for someone in her profession. The fact that she broke her engagement with Wilson is quite worrying; and the reasons are very contradictory: is it infidelity, or is it that he was pressing for sex before they were married?

Well, that aside, it later emerged that Esther is having some consultations with a doctor, and I cannot agree more; I thinks she really needs that, time to reflect on all this and the turn of events that have happened just too fast.

Dr. Phil on Family TV @ 9.35PM Weekdays

Dr. Phil is a well renowned psychologist, and a great show host; so much that he’s one of the few ranked among the top show hosts in the world like Oprah.
He brings guests on the show that happen to be ordinary people dealing, or having dealt with diverse level of circumstances; from those that every person can identify with, to others that are quite isolated. That makes it very interesting because we are naturally like both. He’s really cool calm and collected and authoritative at the same time, especially when he brings in some technical input which he does well.

He offers help to his guests and viewers, based on the topic being handled in the show, which he presents it to his guests and leaves it to them to consider. It’s productive given the fact that he’s an expert in what the show is all about.

From time to time, Dr. Phil commits to bring back some guests who have been in his show, to evaluate the progress they made since they had to his show last.

Dr. Phil has his signature of ending the show by getting his wife off the audience as she’s always conspicuously in the show, and grabbing her hand as they walk off, with her quick short steps while he waves. If you’ve heard something that’s phenomenon about anyone, chances are that you’ll find them on this show being interviewed by Jeff Koinange. The former CNN reporter is a well articulated show host – quite rare to find; his style might be controversial: heavy western accent, strong body language, dramatic accentuation and all, but there’s one thing that no one can dispute: he sure stands out in his profession.

As he ends the show, Jeff will have to make you say the station’s slogan with you; it doesn’t matter who you are, but you’ll say the last part of the line, “All Kenyan, all the time”. All guests do comply, with one exception, one veteran politician; he was straight on it, “No I won’t do it”. That was right on the show; it might have appeared humorous at first but I later thought, we’ve had a culture of hurting one another; those who’ve fought for democracy in this country have had a bitter share of this. This can affect someone, to an extent of being very cautious before trusting anyone on anything. He calls it the way of the master. He maintains that when Jesus was on earth, He spoke the truth directly, calling the people to “repent or die”. He’s against the gospel of preaching the gospel of, “come to Jesus and your life will be good”. He argues that when someone finds challenges in Christian life which is expected as opposed to the “good life” all the way, the person is bound to give up and turn back.

The way of the master is a reality TV, where Kirk Cameron and his co-host walk up to people in the streets and engages them in conversations, aimed at showing them their spiritual position in relation to judgment, by just using the 10 commandments. For instance, if someone has ever told a lie, looked at a woman with lust and so on, common things that people are guilty of, one is brought to realization that they have fallen on God’s standard and stand to face judgment. On the basis of this new knowledge, one can seek a solution which is to accept Jesus as savior and Lord.

The hosts also encounter people from different sects and cults, and in the show they bring out their beliefs, explaining exactly how they’ve deviated from the truth.

700 Club on Family TV @ 11PM Weekdays

The show is produced by US based TV station by the name CBN (Christian Broadcasting News). The 30 min program is packed with teachings from the bible that are very enlightening. They run as series runs for a period of time, before another new one takes over and the process continues.

There is a misconception that Dr. Cleflo teaches on prosperity alone. By listening to this program you’ll then realize how untrue this is. The teachings cover various aspects of a Christian life including holiness, living right, relationships and of course Word of faith including principles that bring health and prosperity. My personal view is that there is nothing wrong with on prosperity, as long as it’s given its place and God is given His place in ones life. In fact we need to be prosperous in order for us to be effective in what God has called us to do. God comes first, and after focusing on Him seeking Him, then as the bible says we’ll experience blessing and all other good things that we need for this life.

Praise The Lord on Family TV on Weekdays Latenight

This is a TBN show brought on Family TV. He is visiting Kenya and is scheduled to perform in Mavuno Mega Dome. He made an appearance on Mike on the Mike’s show on Radio 316, where he narrates his life, what he believes, but it’s how he gave his life to Jesus that captured my attention.

Stitchie was not initially a born again Christian. But in an international festival, he performed and the remarkable thing is that on a stage where people were mentioning different kind of gods, he mentioned the name of Jesus Christ which was quite a shocker to everyone. He went ahead and became the best performer in that festival. After all the attention he got from that, one man approached him and gave him a gift; it was a small Gedions Bible as he came to find out.

In his hotel room, he could go through various scriptures given for different life situations; when discouraged, when lonely and so on. He was then so convicted that he needed to change his was of life and turn to God. He told his crew that he was quiting music and gave his life to Christ!

Stitchie has this inspiration to share, that it’s important to know who you are; what’s your identity? He reminds us that we are a holy nation. He quoted the song, “Justified, royal priesthood, holy nation, little lower than the angels”.

When asked what to expect in the concert, Stitchie promised ‘Love in the Dome’. ‘Expect God’s presence, love, come to see not what Stitchie will do but what God will do.’. He said. He promised to perform to the best of his ability in excellence, “Because I give praise unto the King”, he added.

Jam 316 with Big Mike on the Mike on Radio 316, Morning Weekdays

Mike on the Mike comes to me as a person full of energy and passion. He also occasionally gets candid about some issues affecting the society, telling it like it is, and stepping on toes if necessary which is quite another side of him

Shangilia with Anthony Ndiema on Hope FM @ 1 PM Weekdays

If you ever listened to this show, you’ll hear something like, “Niko darasani” (I’m in class), and you think, no one should be listening to radio in class!! But you’ll soon to realize that the class is the show, and teachers are the hosts (Anthony Ndiema and John Gichuru mlipa ushuru aliyeone nuru). And I quite like it.

If you ever wanted to hear the best of Gospel Kenyan local, then Shangilia is the show for you. One thing that you will realize on this show is that Kenya has talent. Kenyan local music has surely come a long way, and the appreciation that it has continued to receive from Kenyans is very well substantiated.

Something else unique about this show is that it’s the only one done in Swahili in an English language station. Anthony Ndiema, one the show host has a quite charismatic personality, and has a rich tone of pure Swahili language unlike many of the younger generation that are more into Sheng (Swahili’s slang). His co-host John Gichuru is a perfect complement.

Shangilia’s listeners are usually treated to some appearances by various Kenyan gospel artists. Daddy Owen aka Papa Fololo aka King of Kapungala, Jimmy Gait, Christine Ndela, Rough Tone, Mercy Masika, Neema, Eunice Njeri, Blackman Muthami, Asha Mapenzi to name just a few are some of the artists who have be guests at one time on Shangilia.

Praise Junction with Wambui on Hope FM @ 11AM Weekdays

Wambui brings various guests who tackle spiritual issues from listeners. My only question is the match she’s looking for: above 35 years man; I think this gap is too big, and I doubt if she’s after a committed relationship. A love relationship is a serious thing, and if it’s not intended to be a committed lasting one, it’s better not start it in the first place. You can save yours and another’s time. Correct me if I am wrong but someone putting great effort to find someone 13 years plus older, to me does not fall into the category of a long and lasting relationship; probably something for fun, while waiting to move on to something else. Of course there’s nothing wrong with this, except for one reason: she married.

And so on this front, I disagree with Angela. Mwalimu, as his co-host likes calling him, can make you laugh till you drop. You’ll hear virtually every public transport tuned to this show, and once in a while it’s common to have a whole bus lose composure especially on Mwalimu’s antics; the two makes quite a unique team that’s hard to come by any other way.

I however have some reservations on the later part of the show; various topics are tackled, most of which I personally disagree with on the basis of how lightly they are handled. I believe that nothing should done be at the expense of human values and propagation of the same. Unfortunately, I think this happens a lot in this show, by the look of most of the topics discussed and the tone with which they’re discussed. I must note that some of the topics are however objective and safe.

From time to time, I do make postings from these topics and give my views. You can join me in addressing some matters that could be hanging carelessly to the detriment of the youth and the society in general, and also give credit where it’s due.

Truth FM

Truth FM is one of the newest Christian radio stations. It’s owned by Family Media, which also owns Family TV and Tune Inn music shops and the Friendship Company. Their offices are situated in Kileleshwa, one of Nairobi’s up market suburbs. The station runs Christian shows and Christian music. Their style of music seems to have a bias towards rock, whose taste is not as in many people as in other styles like R&B, Reggae and local.

But they do have inspiring shows, vibrant hosts and great music too. At some point at late night, the station is hooked on to it’s sister TV station’s voice, Family TV, so that you can follow the show that’s showing on TV on radio.

The station will always be credited as the pioneering Christian radio station, which has been a big desire in many Kenyan Christians.

Hope FM

This is the second mainstream Christian station to be introduced in Kenya.
